Khan Academy is groundbreaking and world changing.

Salman Khan was a hedge fund manager who left the world of Finance and entered the world of Online Education. His story is interesting and it’s worth listening to first hand on YouTube. In short he was helping his cousin with schoolwork, but Khan’s cousin was in New Orleans while he was in Boston. Khan posted his tutorials on YouTube and guess what, lots of other people benefited from those online lessons.

Khan created a website with tons of video clips, primarily in Math and Science. The website is called Khan Academy and it’s all for free. The Math level ranges from basic addition to university and graduate levels of Linear Algebra and Calculus. Bill Gates loves Khan Academy so much that he spoke about on TedTalks and gave Khan millions of dollars in funding to help run and expand the website. Because of the philanthropic donation by Bill Gates and others Khan Academy is and will remain a free website.

What is really amazing about Khan Academy is that the site now has thousand of video all taught by Salman Khan. He is a master of teaching, because he is so good at explaining concepts and does it with patience and humor. As of June 2011, over 60 million lessons have been viewed. The videos are usually around 10 minutes each. School districts around the US are starting to use Khan Academy for teaching Math and Science. Students can learn and move ahead at their own pace, as well as anyone who wants to learn more on their own.
